Crossfit Isn't Just For Athletes - An Interview with Chelsea Greenwood, Owner of Crossfit Buckroe Beach

Not too long ago CrossFit gyms and their members  around the country were competing in the CrossFit Open. Maybe you've never heard of the Open...maybe you have. In short it's the first qualifying stage to make it to the CrossFit Games (the world's premier test to find the "Fittest on Earth).

It sounds like CrossFit is just for the elite athletes of the world, right?

WRONG

Over the past few weeks I've developed a relationship with Chelsea Greenwood, owner of CrossFit Buckroe Beach. Chelsea is so passionate about her gym and the community and culture she is building to #makebuckroegreatagain and help people live full and healthy lives!

Recently, she sat down for an interview with me to help me (and you) understand exactly what her CrossFit gym is all about and who is welcome. Hint: it's not just the elite athletes of Hampton Roads, VA.

Dr. Elizabeth Brewer: When did you get into CrossFit and why?

Chelsea Greenwood: I got into CrossFit in 2014 after my 25th birthday. I had recently lost my father to cancer and had 3 children at home in diapers. I wanted to regain my self confidence and feel better about my post pregnancy body image.

Dr. Elizabeth Brewer:  Why did you open your own CrossFit gym?

Chelsea Greenwood: Over the years I've been privileged to work at multiple CrossFit gym. While I learned a lot at each gym, I was unable to obtain my vision for helping others. People get into this industry for multiple reasons, monetary, or hobby based. My heart and soul is helping people better their lives. I knew I could not do that without opening my own facility.

Dr. Elizabeth Brewer:  How is CrossFit Buckroe Beach different?

Chelsea Greenwood: We're small, located in a small town starving for a new direction. Over the years the beautiful beaches of Buckroe have been run down, filled with low income housing and dive bars. With the help of the community I hope to change that.

Dr. Elizabeth Brewer:  Is CrossFit only for elite athletes or can beginners (people who have barely ever worked out) benefit as well?

Chelsea Greenwood: CrossFit as a sport and CrossFit as functional fitness are completely different. With that being said we do program for the Elite level athlete and make progressions so that everyone has room to grow.

Dr. Elizabeth Brewer: What should someone expect in their first class (or week) if they've never tried CrossFit before?

Chelsea Greenwood: Hands on coaching, tailored to fit the individual needs. Personable coaching and nutrition counseling. Most gyms make money off of the clients that do not show. We're not just a place to pick the heavy things up and put them down. We're a family, holding one another accountable for reaching one another's goals. Our families grow together.

Dr. Elizabeth Brewer: You use the slogan "Make Buckroe Great Again" in a lot of your posts. What does that mean to you and why is community so important?

Chelsea Greenwood: When we moved in, the locals joked about how we had the first "real sign" in Buckroe. we want to improve the overall physical appearance of Buckroe Beach while working with the other businesses in the area. We want to support other growing businesses in the area while gaining the respect of the locals.

Dr. Elizabeth Brewer:  Are you originally from Buckroe? If not, how did you get here?

Chelsea Greenwood: I grew up all over in Hampton Roads - Newport News, Hampton and Poquoson. I found myself back in Buckroe during my college years and met my husband here in 2008.

Dr. Elizabeth Brewer:  What would be your #1 piece of advice for someone trying to gain traction and jumpstart a healthier lifestyle?

Chelsea Greenwood: All you have to do is walk through the door. The hardest part is committing to changing your life and feeling vulnerable and new. The community at CrossFit Buckroe Beach will make you feel welcome and the coaches will give you the tools to feel confident!

I am so excited to continue to work alongside and collaborate with Chelsea as we have a very similar vision for helping others gain traction and live their best lives.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

Welcome to my "dump room"  😳  Go ahead, judge...now keep reading. This room used to be my home office. When I opened my Downtown Hampton clinic location in January it morphed into the "dump rom" - the room where everything gets dumped if I don't want to deal with it in the moment, but it's in the way.  The door to this room stays CLOSED! Over the past few months I would open it from time to time intending to take care of it, but the overwhelm of it all called the door shut again.  This morning I set my timer and I chunked it down. Voila! The thing that has overwhelmed me for 3+ months is now a source of joy in a matter of 60 minutes  🤯 What does your overwhelm look like? Maybe it's not a room in your house. Maybe it's the food in your pantry/fridge. Maybe it's the vision you see in the mirror. Maybe it's the lies and stories you fill your heart and head with.  I want to share with you some tactical advise for tackling the overwhel...

5 Tips to Keeping Food Healthy & Fun

There is often a misconception that “healthy” food doesn’t taste good/is boring and honestly, that misconception is probably based on some truly terrible food experiences that carry the term “health food”.  I’m here to tell you though, there is absolutely no reason why your fruits, vegetables, lower carb, lower fat, higher protein, higher fiber, etc. food shouldn’t taste just as amazing as all the other food choices out there.  Because let's be real for a minute, if it doesn’t taste good who the heck is going to choose to eat it more than once or twice? I’m going to share a few of my tips and tricks for how to keep your foods tasting 100% edible for all members of your family without breaking your budget or adding tons of extra calories to your meal. Hot Sauce is king. Y’all, it can be added to eggs, meat, and vegetables for so much added flavor!  It can be added before, during, or after cooking and guess what, there are so many dang hot sauce options out there that they...
