All Things Exercise

I have been asked a lot about exercise recently, especially with many gyms being closed and individuals trying to maintain their fitness levels or take this time to start exercising from home. Some of the questions I have been asked are: What is heart rate? How do you check your heart rate? What is a normal heart rate? What should my heart rate be with exercise? Why is exercise programmed the way it is? Which type of program is better for me? Does muscle really burn fat? Which type of exercise burns more calories - strength training or cardio? What conditions would prevent someone from participating in exercise? Let's first discuss heart rate - this is the foundation for exercise. Your heart rate can give you a ton of information and help you with proper programming. It can also help you understand why you are doing what you are doing, even if someone else is programming for you. You don't have to do the thinking, but to understand why you are doing certain thing...

How Much Water Should I Drink?

Water makes up 60% of the body and is a great place to start on a wellness journey. Have joint pain? Try drinking some water. The cartilage that cushions and lubricates your joints is about 80% water Have brain fog? Try drinking some water. Water is used in the production of hormones and neurotransmitters that fuel the brain! Experiencing chronic pain? Try drinking some water. The blood is made up of 90% water. Your kidneys and liver use water to flush toxic waste from your body. Decreased toxic burden = decreased inflammation = decreased pain. Trying to curb those cravings? Try drinking some water. Cells need oxygen (provided from the blood). When they are "starving" they crave glucose (sugar) I challenge you this week to drink AT LEAST half your body weight (lbs) in ounces of water each day.  Drinking water should be a part of your physical wellness every day because that is where it all starts. It's all at the cellular level. If we are not feeling good a...

Traction Update | New Clinic Location in the Heart of Downtown Hampton

It's been a while since I've posted on the blog. Big things have been happening at Traction Pain Relief & Wellness. I am so grateful for everyone who has trusted me with their care - whether it is just asking questions, coming to a workshop or working through a program with me. It truly is my passion and my goal to help people get back to living the life they love without relying on pain medications and injections or even being told "Just don't do that anymore". For those that don't know, as of January 1st we opened a new clinic location in the heart of Downtown Hampton! The new space has allowed for more scheduling flexibility and the opportunity for more workshops to share FREE education. Check out this video for a quick tour of the clinic. You may notice that the Traction Clinic is different than a traditional physical therapy clinic. We don't have a lot of machines or a large gym area where you are with several other patients. We spend 1:1 t...
