Welcome to my "dump room" 😳 Go ahead, judge...now keep reading.
This room used to be my home office. When I opened my Downtown Hampton clinic location in January it morphed into the "dump rom" - the room where everything gets dumped if I don't want to deal with it in the moment, but it's in the way. The door to this room stays CLOSED! Over the past few months I would open it from time to time intending to take care of it, but the overwhelm of it all called the door shut again. This morning I set my timer and I chunked it down. Voila! The thing that has overwhelmed me for 3+ months is now a source of joy in a matter of 60 minutes 🤯
What does your overwhelm look like? Maybe it's not a room in your house. Maybe it's the food in your pantry/fridge. Maybe it's the vision you see in the mirror. Maybe it's the lies and stories you fill your heart and head with. I want to share with you some tactical advise for tackling the overwhelm in your life today. First, we need to look at the 3 excuses we use to procrastinate tackling our to-do lists
1) There's not enough time. Here's the deal, when we're forced to do something, suddenly the time is there. Which means it's there all the time, but we've just chosen to limit ourselves by believing that it isn't. Here are some things you can do right now to start taking back control of your time
- Show some respect - think of time as a person. If you're always late, start being early. Write your appointments and keep them. Set your alarm to remind you when to start getting ready...early.
- Find out what your favorite distractions are and set up a defense against them.
- Chunk it down - break your large task into several smaller, more manageable tasks and tackle each one methodically
2) There's too much to do. Make your to-do list and look at it. Now separate that list into two smaller lists - what needs to happen right now and what can wait. Hide the wait list. Take your right now list and separate it again into big important tasks and small insignificant tasks. Spend the day doing the most important tasks. Voila! You just prioritized and gave yourself momentum!
3) I'm exhausted. Use the tools above to make the time to get the rest you need and have the fun you want so you can enjoy the life you have.
Whatever your version of overwhelm is...I challenge you to tackle one piece today. Stop letting the overwhelm hold you back from the amazing things you have to offer this world! Stop closing the door to possibility because you don't want to face what's inside.
